The purpose of this project is to educate Brownsville citizens and visitors, through a beautiful work of art, about the story of Amelia Earhart. This internationally known, ground-breaking aviatrix made a tremendous impact on women in piloting. She was a dynamic role model for all who have an interest in the aviation industry. By highlighting her many historic accomplishments, hopefully young aviation enthusiasts will be inspired by her example to follow in her footsteps.
Amelia's ties to Brownsville's rich aviation history were cemented in 1929, when she greeted Charles Lindbergh after his historic flight from Mexico City. In Brownsville, she earned her commercial pilot's license, becoming only the fourth American woman to do so. Our city played a significant role in shaping her illustrious career.
In April 2024, a subcommittee of The Dean Porter Park Renovation Inc. committee will unveil a beautiful bronze statue of Amelia Earhart, located in Dean Porter Park in Brownsville, Texas.
